General Motors: GMC

Learn About the GMC Brand and All It Has To Offer

When you first think about GMC vehicles what comes to mind right away? Is it the rugged durability of GMC trucks? The long history of successful auto manufacturing right here in the U.S.? Is it style and power? All of these things and more are true of the GMC brand. Here, we're going to tell you more about the history of this company, which vehicles really stand out from the pack, and share some interesting and often unknown facts about GMC.

GMC: A Look at the Auto Makers Long History in the U.S.

As with many other auto manufacturers, GMC began as another company entirely. While other auto makers began in the field of electronics, aviation or even in steamships, GMC was founded in 1902 as a truck company, the Rapid Motor Vehicle Company. Its debut truck was the Rapid and it was built by the Grabowsky brothers.

Later that year, the second forerunner of GMC started operations and called itself the Reliance Motor Co. A large manufacturing facility was started a few years later and trucks began to be built in 1906 in this new facility in Pontiac, MI.

William C. Durant purchased Reliance for GM in 1908. Operations were then moved to another part of Michigan but returned to Flint, MI, later on. Truck sizes grew over time, eventually seating six people. They were still open air vehicles, however, very unlike modern trucks of today.

Fast forward and you'll see the expansion of the GM brand in more and more trucks. Eventually, the Model T 18 was created in 1931. Picture an old-fashioned milk delivery truck and you'll have a good idea of what this vehicle looked like. In 1937 the GMC Suburban Carryall was released. It had two doors along with three bench seats available.

Fast forward even further and you'll find the military trucks, big rigs, dump trucks and lots and lots of pickup trucks for the common man were being created by GMC. With an eye always toward functionality and great design, GMC is a leader in the automotive world for good reason.

Three Things You May Not Know About the GMC Brand

While GMC originated in the U.S., and remains popular here to this day, it also has a strong presence in other countries. Did you know for instance that GMC entered the Middle East market in the 1930s? It offered vehicles with four-wheel drive that were perfect for desert use. Below are three other fun facts that you may not know about the GMC brand.

  • Did you know that GMC's Denali trim level outsells the entire product line of some other popular auto makers? Apparently there are a lot of people who love this luxurious trim level!
  • GMC has been nicknamed 'Jims' in the Middle East.
  • In 1929 GMC was commissioned to create special vehicles to transport circus animals.

As you can see, GMC has a long history of providing interesting, innovative and sharply-styled rides for many decades now. These facts aren't going to change as GMC continues to look for new and better ways to improve its vehicles.
